An Intelligent Thief

Detective Abhay saw a boy being taken to the interrogation room. He was looking careless and arrogant, chewing a gum. He was accused of a car theft. The car owner parked his car in front of a shopping complex. He left the engine key in the car itself, which was observed by someone and driven away quickly. Police got the information and started chasing. After taking a few turns the car was found in a small lane with a dead end. The police couldn’t find anybody else except this boy in that lane; the ignition key was missing, so he was brought to the police station for interrogation.

On seeing Abhay, he asked for a cigarette and Abhay shouted at him for this. Then he asked if he could get a chewing gum. Abhay didn't say anything to the boy. He turned to the inspector and said if you turn this table upside down you will get a clue".

Why did Abhay ask to turn the table? What clue they could get?

Answer to the Puzzle

Abhay saw the boy chewing gum when he was being taken to the interrogation room, when he asked for the second one he suspected that the first one must be hidden somewhere. When the table was turned they could find the key stuck to the table with the chewing gum.
