The Unchanged Tyre |
 |
 |
Detective Ahay was heading towards the city. The city was still 10 kilometres away. It was 2o clock in the afternoon. Abhay was in a deep thought. It just stopped raining and the road is still very wet. After driving for about two to three kilometres he saw a group of men standing in the midst of the road and signalling him to stop the car. When stopped, he was informed that two unidentified men came and looted the S.T.D. booth and fled away on a green scooter. Abhay rushed off immediately.
After going ahead five kilometres he saw a green scooter parked at the side of the road, and the Stepneycover lying next to the scooter. When he enquired them about the reason for their stopping there, they replied the tyre was punctured about half an hour back and they are able to finish it just now and will be moving in a minute or so.
Abhay gave a careful look at the tyres and said "No you haven't changed the tyre, you have only removed air from the Stepney".
What is the basis for his comment?
Answer to the Puzzle
As it had been raining, the road was wet, and the Stepney, which was covered with a plastic sheet, should be dry. According to suspects, they had completed changing the tyre and are ready to go. If they had changed the tyre, then the old tyre sitting in the Stepney place now should have been wet and the other tyre should be dry. However, the tyre in the Stepney place is dry.
