Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus globulus - Latin.

Origin/ Where Found

Native to Australia and Tasmania. Probably first used medicinally by Australian aborigines.

Indications/ Properties

Congestion, cough, respiratory ailments, minor cuts and wounds, and muscle soreness/ Germicide, antiseptic, astringent, antibacterial, insect repellent, stimulant.

Part(s) Used

Oil from leaves. Also from its roots and bark. The oil is very strong and has many medicinal uses.

Description

There are over 300 species of eucalyptus. It is one of the largest trees in the world and grows up to 300 feet.

Eucalyptus is a strong antiseptic. The aborigines used it for injuries to prevent infections and for reducing fevers. The strong anti-viral, antiseptic and expectorant action of this essence renders it valuable for most respiratory infections. It is extremely useful rubbed onto the chest for respiratory infections. Eucalyptol loosens phlegm in the chest, making it easier to cough up. Using it in inhalations is effective as it helps call off the invading microbes. It can be used as well as an air spray to kill off airborne microbes and freshen the room.

Eucalyptus trees were planted in swampy areas to deter mosquitoes. The huge root system helps drain the mosquitoes breeding ground and the insect repellent quality of the leaves discourages the insects. If you have a problem with mosquitoes in your home you can hang the leaves at your doorway or other entry way to deter them. The oil can also be rubbed on the skin to prevent being bitten.

Head, upper sinus, respiratory passages and bronchial tree.

Usage

For any external treatment: You can use the oil or leaves - the oil is just more convenient.

For massage oil: 10 drops of essence in 20 ml of vegetable oil.

Almost all the steam inhalers use Eucalyptus as their primary ingredient. Individuals with upper sinus problems or having a severe congestion could try out the oil. A small towel soaked in a cupful of tepid water with a few drops of Eucalyptus oil - with the excess water wrung out - on the face gives a great relief. The warm towel could be placed on the chest with similar results. This process could be repeated till comfortably relieved.

Inhaling steam from boiling water to which Eucalyptus oil has been added also helps.

Leaves may be applied as a poultice for healing skin. The oil is also an effective antibacterial, but must be diluted. 2 teaspoons or less of the oil per pint of water is recommended.

For compress: 1-2 drops of essential oil in a bowl of cold, tepid or hot water. Place a handkerchief gently in the surface of the water to soak up the film of the essential oil. Apply accordingly.

Eucalyptus is extremely effective in bringing down high temperatures by using cold compresses on the forehead, hands and feet.

It is an effective local pain killer for chicken pox, cold sores, shingles and also mildly anti-spasmodic.

It is useful for muscular sprains and discomfort, and when diluted is indicated for rheumatic arthritis.

It can be used in baths, massage oil and with compresses.

Decoction

Pour boiling water over washed Eucalyptus leaves and drink or inhale the vapor to relieve upper respiratory ailments.

Eucalyptus is used in many herbal teas for it's many bronchial and sinus benefits. A few dried leaves in your tea is great for coughs as well.

Caution

Can irritate gastrointestinal tract. Toxic in large amounts. Remember- NEVER INGEST THE OIL. Fatalities can occur from ingestion of as little as a teaspoonful.

Contraindications

Do not take Eucalyptus if you have severe liver diseases, inflammatory diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and bile ducts. Eucalyptus preparations should not be applied to the face, especially the nose, of babies and very young children. If you are taking other drugs, the absorption of such drugs could be delayed.

Side Effects

Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
