Fever, High and Persistent

Diet

A diet of fluids and extra calories and protein. 2500 to 5000 ml of cool fluids can be in the form of soups, juices and/ or gelatins. Increase calories by up to 50% if possible, otherwise, just try to keep calorie intake up, make fluids high caloric fluids such as shakes, meal replacers, or juices. Calories should include protein to make up for tissue destruction that occurs during high, prolonged fevers.

How it Works

Your metabolic rate increases by 7% for every degree Fahrenheit rise in body temperature. This increases your caloric need. Fluids are needed to help replace the fluids lost due to increased perspiration and increased excretion of body wastes, produced by the tissue damage caused by the fever.

Other Recourses

These Work

Keep drinking lot of liquids as your body would have lost since the onset of the fever. A 'warm' bath helps in granting comfort to the distressed body.

These Don't

Avoid taking medication (antipyretics) when you have a temperature below 100 F, as this could actually depress the immunity in your body. Exercising actually boosts the body's heat generating units.
