Frequently Asked Questions

When I get a new telephone connection, do they provide me a telephone set or is it my responsibility to get one?
Unlike in America, when a new telephone connection is given the department will give a telephone set and the department personnel will install it for you.

Do I need to take any special permission to use a telephone connection for a fax machine?
No permission is required to use a telephone connection for a fax machine.

What about adding few extensions in the house?
You can add as many extensions as you need in your house. No permission is required.

Where should I pay my telephone bill?
The easiest way is to pay it in the nearest post office. Otherwise, pay it in the nearest telephone exchange or in a telephone bill collection centre.

If I purchase a telephone set from foreign countries, is there any special wiring to be done?
First check whether you have purchased the unit from a country that uses 220 or 240 volts. If not, check whether that unit adapter (if at all they provide) is a universal adapter (it works with any voltage). If not, you need to buy a voltage converter.

Also make sure whether adapter pins are round ones similar to Indian standards. Otherwise, you need to get a connector that accepts Indian pin on one side and other pin on the other side.

In some countries, telephone jacks are provided. All you need to do is, just plug-in the wire into the jack which is not the case in India. Typically, wires are connected directly to the points instead of using jacks, so, you need to take care of this.

Are there any third parties other than DOT who provide telephone connections?
At this time, only one-third party "Tata Teleservices Ltd" is authorised to provide telephone connections. To talk to them, dial 121 or dial them directly 6101212. Please note that, in some areas, you can not use these telephone connections to dial into Internet, so please check with them whether Internet facility is available in your area. The procedure is same as DOT, however, these days you will get the telephone in about a week (So, you don't have to spend large amounts in deposits).
