Laad Bazaar

No visit to Hyderabad is complete without a trip to Laad Bazaar, the legendary 'Street of Love'. This bazaar with bangle shops flanking either side, emerges westward from the arches of Charminar. Laad Bazaar is known to have been established by Ladli Begum, wife of Mir Mehboob Khan, the sixth Nizam of Hyderabad. Laad bazaar boasts of hectic trading in bangles made of lacquer and glass, henna, cosmetics, trinkets and other bridal accessories. This makes Laad Bazaar to be known as 'Bridal Bazaar' too. The best time to visit this place is during Ramzan or the wedding season, when Laad Bazaar gets a heavy mix of both burkha-clad women and lambadinis (gypsy women) in all their traditional finery, on the one end of the spectrum, and modern, fashion conscious young college girls at the other end.

Evenings are the best time to visit, as all the areas in the neighborhood of Charminar are well lit, and trading goes on into the late hours of the night..

Be careful who you rub your shoulders with in this busy bazaar as the shopping goes on irrespective of traffic congestion. Drafts of fragrant attars mingle with the mouthwatering aroma of hot, spicy kababs and Irani tea. The flutter of our feathered friends in the bird market behind provide a perfect backdrop for a memorable and an exhilarating experience complete with a rich riot of colors.

Also consider visiting the 'Charkaman' and 'Mitti-Ka-Sher' in the neighborhood. They are famous for antique jewelry in kundan and enamel, old bidri, exquisite tapestries, silver, crystal and pearls. Black metal-ware and wooden artifacts sold here are designed and handcrafted locally. Darushafa is another place known for the production of tissue thin silver sheets that are used to top some Indian sweetmeats as well as bidriware.
